Recent Media Coverage of Lazy Critter RanchMembership Showcase- Published in the ALSA publication ShowRing Submitted by Pam Jensen
Will and Pat Leighton, of Lazy Critter Llama Ranch, Norco, CA., purchased their first llama, a female, in 1981. Like most first-time llama owners, the purchase was due to “love at first sight.” Pat had been working for a large horse ranch at the time when she and her boss went to see a baby llama. Pat thought her boss must be losing her mind, but when she saw the baby it was love at first sight. Her boss didn’t buy the baby but Pat did! And, as with all llama owners, one leads to another… and another… and another. Pat and Will learned that their new cria purchase needed a friend and they accommodated her, along with a Dr. Doolittle son, who became the foundation male for their herd for a long time. Currently Pat and Will own about 40 llamas. They love to show and exhibit the crias they have worked so hard to produce. Along with showing, they also enjoy packing, hiking and carting, but Pat’s passion is showing in halter competition. She began showing long before ALSA came into existence — in fact Andy Tillman was one of the judges she showed under before he became an ALSA judge. Pat also enjoys mentoring new llama owners and guiding them on the care and raising of llamas. Both Pat and Will enjoy going to shows and seeing old friends they have met through the llama business, most of which are like family at this time. After more than 25 years in the llama business, both Pat and Will find llamas the most intelligent and enjoyable animals they have known. If you’re in the area, give them a call and stop in for a visit!
